Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind” (Einstein). Einstein condemned religions to remain radical by focusing solely on the feelings of mystery and human concerns while abolishing divine interaction. A point of correction is that Einstein has seen religions and faith programs other than Islam, of which most focus on calling people to believe in God and behave well in their societies. However, the Message of Islam lectures beyond these two fundamental pillars. It commands the studies of the universes, land developments, and technological innovations by dividing Allah’s signs/verses into two interconnected parts; Qur’anic signs and Universal signs. The latter signs encourage and enlighten the studies of science.
Hence, all the disciplines were initially introduced by Allah in the Qur’an but it is up to the people to conduct further researches and analysis on every field of science to develop knowledge for the sake of public interest and social advancement. Researchers need to reference two sources, of which one is the Noble Qur’an and the other is to endeavor in conducting empirical researchers inferred from the Qur’an. The Latter must be based on imperial, empirical, impartial, and practical investigation intending to progressive inquiries, innovations, enlargements, augmentations, analysis, improvements, and strengthens. Allah Ta’ala: says “It is not possible for a man that Allah should give him the Book and dominion and Prophet–hood, and then he should say to men, ‘Be servants to me and not to Allah;’ but he would say, ‘Be solely devoted to the Lord because you learn and teach the Book and because you study it in depth” (Qur’an: Aal–e–Imran: 80).
Any research that has its roots in Islam is not only valid and accurate but also divinely guided and unambiguous. That is what Allah Has already promised when He said: “Soon We will show them our Signs in farthest parts of the earth (in the horizons), and among their own people (and within themselves) until it becomes manifest to them that it is the truth” (Qur’an: Ha Mim As– Sajdah (Fusilat – The One that was Clarified): 54).
At this stage, what we need is to view and review our knowledge in the light of the Qur’an. There, we can confirm obtaining verified knowledge. To enhance
such truthful knowledge we may need to introduce a new program that could be named “The Islamization of Knowledge”. This program will primarily need to reset the definition of Ulema (Knowledgeable Persons or Islamic Scholars) by taking the meaning of Ulema back to its origin that has been derived from the Qur’an. Since the term Ulema is the head of all the terms and branches of knowledge it can be defined by the Creator and not sufficiently by the dictionaries and encyclopedias authored by humans after Allah’s revelation.
This paper argues that the meaning of Ulema was long ago distorted and diverted from its purpose and definition to a manmade purpose and definition. As stated by Allah, the original definition of Ulema describes those who have sufficient knowledge in one or more of the science branches and Islamic knowledge at the same time, and then, relate the combination of these two entertained knowledgeto understanding Allah, the Almighty, the Omnipotent, the Omnipresent, and Omniscient. Therefore, as it currently sounds, the conjecture regarding Ulema is absurd and without appropriate merit or, at least, is a partial and incomplete definition.
In short, my paper explains verse number 28 of Chapter Fatir – The Originator – of the Qur’an, which explicitly teaches the clear – cut definition of the term Ulema as Allah says:“Dost thou not see that Allah sends down water from the sky, and We bring forth therewith fruits of different colours; and among the mountains are streaks, white and red, of diverse hues and others raven black”
(Qur’an: Fatir: 28)
